La Commission électorale nigérienne a dévoilé le calendrier des prochaines élections. Présidentielle et législatives auront lieu le 27 décembre 2020, quelques semaines après les élections municipales et régionales qui se tiendront le 1er novembre.
Initialement fixés au 9 mai 2016, municipales et régionales auront donc finalement lieu fin 2020. L’enjeu est de taille car depuis trois ans, ces scrutins ont été plusieurs fois reportés à cause de la saison des pluies, ou encore la nécessité d’élaborer un fichier électoral, selon les autorités.
Depuis 2016, les mandats des élus locaux, qui ont expiré, sont donc prolongés tous les six mois par le gouvernement, pour que les institutions puissent fonctionner.
Calendrier respecté en revanche pour la présidentielle et les législatives avec un premier tour le 27 décembre 2020 et un second début 2021. Les principaux candidats à la présidentielle sont déjà identifiés. Le ministre de l’intérieur Mohamed Bazoum représentera la formation au pouvoir, le président Issoufou s’étant engagé à ne pas se représenter pour un troisième mandat.
Du côté de l’opposition, Hama Amadou, en exil, a été désigné début août candidat par le Mouvement démocratique nigérien (Moden), principal parti d’opposition. Condamné à un an de prison dans une affaire de trafic international de bébés, il pourrait être écarté de la course. Depuis le début, Hama Amadou dénonce un procès politique.
