L’alliance internationale pour la vaccination GAVI a annoncé mercredi qu’au cours des deux prochaines années, 12 pays d’Afrique recevraient 18 millions de doses du vaccin contre le paludisme.
Le paludisme, l’une des maladies les plus meurtrières du continent, tue encore chaque année quelque 500 000 enfants de moins de cinq ans. Selon l’Organisation mondiale de la santé (OMS), 96 % des décès dus au paludisme et 95 % des infections dans le monde ont eu lieu en Afrique en 2021.
Lors d’une conférence de presse, le directeur de l’OMS, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, a déclaré qu’”au moins 28 pays africains ont exprimé leur intérêt à recevoir le vaccin RTS,S (contre le paludisme)” et a ajouté qu’un autre vaccin contre le paludisme était en cours d’examen en vue d’une préqualification et, s’il s’avère efficace, pourrait fournir un approvisionnement supplémentaire dans un avenir proche.
Selon un communiqué conjoint de GAVI, de l’UNICEF et de l’OMS, plus de 1,7 million d’enfants au Ghana, au Kenya et au Malawi ont reçu le vaccin RTS,S dans le cadre d’un projet d’essai financé par GAVI depuis 2019.
Le Bénin, le Burkina Faso, le Burundi, le Cameroun, la République démocratique du Congo, le Liberia, le Niger, la Sierra Leone et l’Ouganda sont les neuf autres pays qui devraient recevoir le vaccin, créé par la société pharmaceutique britannique Glaxosmithkline (GSK).
Les premières doses du vaccin RTS,S devraient arriver dans les 12 pays africains au cours du dernier trimestre 2023, ce qui leur permettra de commencer la distribution au début de l’année suivante.
La demande mondiale annuelle de vaccins antipaludiques est estimée entre 40 et 60 millions de doses rien que pour 2026, et passera à entre 80 et 100 millions de doses par an d’ici à 2030. Outre le vaccin RTS,S/AS01, développé et produit par GSK et fourni prochainement par Bharat Biotech, un deuxième vaccin, R21/Matrix-M, développé par l’Université d’Oxford et fabriqué par le Serum Institute of India (SII), devrait également être préqualifié par l’OMS dans un futur proche.
