Dans le cadre de la septième Session ordinaire de la Conférence des Chefs d’Etat du G5 Sahel à Ndjamena (Tchad), le lundi 15 février 2021, le président tchadien, le Maréchal Idriss Déby Itno a annoncé l’envoi de 1200 soldats dans la zone des trois frontières (Mali, Burkina Faso et Niger), pour lutter contre les terroristes qui ne constituent que de cellules cancéreuses pour ces pays sahéliens. Au cours de ce sommet qui s’est déroulé en présence des Chefs d’Etat des pays membres (le Président de la République du Niger Issoufou Mahamadou, le Président de la République du Faso, Roch Marc Christian Kaboré, le Président de la Transition du Mali, Bah N’Daw et présidé par le président mauritanien, Mohamed Ould El-Ghazaouani), le Maréchal Idriss Deby Itno, hôte du sommet, a été désigné nouveau président du G5 Sahel.
En effet annoncé, lors du précédent sommet de Pau, le 13 janvier 2020, l’envoi de soldats tchadiens n’a pu être effectué en raison d’un certains nombres de facteurs, notamment, « la menace jihadiste grandissante sur les bords du lac Tchad, mais également un désaccord constant entre N’Djamena et ses partenaires sur les modalités de ce déploiement ». Mais déterminé à éradiquer ce phénomène, le Maréchal Idriss Deby Itno explique dans un tweet que « nos efforts et ressources mutualisés, nous permettrons de coordonner nos actions pour cette lutte contre le terrorisme ».
Le Président du G5 Sahel sortant, le président mauritanien, Mohamed Ould El-Ghazaouani, a avant de passer le témoin au président tchadien retracé les différentes actions et les moyens mis en œuvre pour lutter contre le terrorisme et promouvoir le développement, notamment dans les zones les plus vulnérables. Mohamed Ould El-Ghazaouani à aussi rendu hommage à Idriss Déby pour cette décision, « Je voudrais lui exprimer toute notre reconnaissance pour les efforts et sacrifices que le Tchad ne cesse de consentir en faveur de la paix et de la sécurité dans la région. Je citerai en particulier sa décision de déployer un deuxième bataillon au profit de la force conjointe du G5 Sahel ».
Au vu des nombreux défis auxquels font face les pays du G5 Sahel, dont entre autres la menace terroriste, la Covid-19 et les problèmes de développement, les différents intervenants ont insisté « sur les moyens et stratégies de tous ordres à déployer par les Etats membres, les organisations régionales, l’Union Africaine, l’ONU, les pays amis et les Partenaires Techniques et Financiers ».
Pour le président de la commission de l’Union africaine, Moussa Faki Mahamat, au-delà des efforts du Tchad, il faut une mobilisation pour une montée en puissance des troupes. « Notre constant plaidoyer se poursuivra pour la mobilisation des ressources et la montée en puissance de la force conjointe du G5 Sahel en coordination avec le secrétariat exécutif », souligne-t-il.
Notons que ce mardi 16 février 2021, est prévu le Sommet élargi de la Coalition Sahel (Pays du G5 Sahel, France, Union Africaine, Cédeao ainsi que les partenaires techniques et financiers).
