Le Président de la République, Chef de l’État, le Général d’Armée Abdourahamane Tiani, a signé le vendredi 8 Août 2025 une ordonnance officialisant la nationalisation de la Société des Mines du Liptako (SML SA). Cette décision marque la reprise en main par l’État d’un acteur majeur de l’exploitation aurifère nationale.
La SML SA, entreprise de droit nigérien, détient deux permis d’exploitation pour l’or : Samira Libiri, renouvelé en novembre 2019 pour cinq ans, et Boulondjounga. En mai 2019, la Société de Patrimoine des Mines du Niger (SOPAMIN) avait cédé 80 % de ses parts au groupe privé McKinel Resources Limited, qui s’engageait alors à relancer et développer les activités minières grâce à des investissements conséquents, estimés à au moins 10 millions de dollars.
Six ans après cette cession, les autorités constatent de « graves manquements » aux obligations contractuelles. Aucun plan d’investissement global n’a été présenté, les arriérés de salaires et de taxes se sont accumulés, et l’endettement de la société s’est fortement aggravé.
La situation a conduit à un fonctionnement réduit de la mine et de l’usine, ponctué par des arrêts fréquents, à des licenciements massifs touchant plus de la moitié des effectifs, et à la suppression d’avantages sociaux essentiels comme l’assurance santé et les cotisations à la Caisse Nationale de Sécurité Sociale. Les ruptures d’approvisionnement sur le site ont accentué les difficultés.
L’État affirme avoir accordé toutes les facilités pour relancer la société, sans succès. Face à l’enjeu économique et stratégique que représente la SML SA, le gouvernement a donc choisi de la nationaliser.
Cette mesure, selon le communiqué du Secrétariat général du gouvernement, s’inscrit dans la vision du Président Tiani de garantir « l’appropriation intégrale par le peuple nigérien de ses ressources naturelles ».
