Cinq soldats chargés de protéger un programme de développement agricole ont été blessés dans une embuscade du groupe armé Boko Haram mardi dans le sud-est du Niger proche du Nigeria, ont indiqué mercredi les autorités locales.
Les soldats sont « tombées dans une embuscade tendue par des éléments de Boko Haram » au moment où ils partaient « prendre position » sur un poste récemment crée pour sécuriser un programme agricole à Lada, a expliqué à la télévision nationale le général Mahamadou Ibrahim Bagadoma, gouverneur de Difa (sud-est).
« Nous sommes déterminés à poursuivre ces travaux (de culture) dans l’intérêt des populations », a affirmé le général, qui a rendu visite aux soldats blessés.
Fin mars, le régime militaire arrivée au pouvoir à Niamey par coup d’Etat le 26 juillet 2023, a lancé des travaux d’aménagement de deux sites agricoles, dont celui de Lada.
Les travaux sur les deux chantiers sont estimés à plus de 2 milliards francs CFA (plus de 3 millions d’euros) financés grâce à des fonds d’une quête nationale.
Le but est d’intensifier la production de riz et de blé, puis de générer plus de 12.000 emplois, selon le ministère nigérien de l’Agriculture.
« La création d’emplois devrait réduire le chômage avec possibilité de stopper le recrutement massif de jeunes par Boko Haram », a affirmé à l’AFP un ex-élu local.
A Lada, les travaux doivent également permettre de sécuriser les habitants souvent victimes d’inondations provoquées par des crues de la rivière la Komadougou Yobé, qui sert de frontière avec le Nigeria.
Les attaques de Boko Haram, mouvement jihadiste né au Nigeria, ont commencé en 2015 au Niger et compromettent gravement la production de poivrons et la pêche, principales ressources de la région de Difa riveraine du Lac Tchad, l’une des plus déshéritées du pays.
Elles empêchent également la réalisation d’importants projets – écoles, dispensaires, puits d’eau potable – dans une région qui abrite 300.000 réfugiés nigérians et déplacés internes ayant fui les violences de Boko Haram et de sa branche dissidente de l’Etat islamique en
Afrique de l’Ouest (Iswap).
A l’ouest, dans la région de Tillabéri près du Burkina Faso et du Mali, le Niger doit aussi faire face aux attaques de l’Etat islamique au grand Sahara (EIGS) et d’Al-Qaïda. Le 17 avril, trois soldats y ont été tués sur une route par l’explosion d’une bombe artisanale au passage de leur véhicule, selon l’armée.
Le 11 avril, six soldats nigériens avaient été tués par une bombe dans la zone d’Inates près du Mali, toujours selon l’armée, qui a affirmé avoir « neutralisé » dans la foulée au moins une dizaine de « terroristes » dans des frappes aériennes des deux côtés de la frontière.
