Désormais, l’onchocercose est exempt de transmission au Niger. C’est à travers un communiqué de presse rendu public ce 30 Janvier 2025 que l’Organisation Mondiale de la Santé a annoncé la bonne nouvelle, félicitant le pays « d’avoir satisfait aux critères d’élimination » de cette maladie. Le Niger, s’inscrit ainsi sur la liste des 05 pays au monde à avoir interrompu la transmission du parasite à la base de cette maladie.
L’onchocercose encore appelée « cécité des rivières » est une maladie des yeux due au ver parasite onchocerca volvulus. Cette maladie cause notamment de fortes démangeaisons qui peuvent défigurer le malade ou encore conduire à la cécité. L’onchocercose touche principalement les populations rurales d’Afrique subsaharienne avec une vague présence en Amérique latine. En 2010, 37 millions de personnes étaient atteintes de cette maladie avec une majorité d’entre elles présentes en Afrique subsaharienne.
Selon le Directeur Général de l’OMS, le Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, « l’élimination d’une maladie est une réalisation qui nécessite un dévouement inlassable ». Aussi félicite t-il le Niger « pour son engagement à libérer sa population de cette maladie aveuglante et stigmatisante qui cause tant de souffrances humaines parmi les plus pauvres ».
L’élimination de cette maladie handicapante du Niger témoigne une fois de plus de la volonté du Niger à offrir à ses populations un cadre de vie sain exempt de maladies; ceci, avec l’appui de ses partenaires techniques et financiers. Après la maladie du ver de Guinée en 2013, l’onchocercose représente la deuxième maladie tropicale négligée éliminée par le pays.
