Un geste qui sera sans aucun doute perçu comme une nouvelle défiance à l’égard des États-Unis et de leurs alliés.
Le porte-parole de l’Organisation iranienne de l’énergie atomique a annoncé que la République islamique avait multiplié par quatre son enrichissement d’uranium. Il a précisé que le stock d’uranium enrichi à 3,67% dépassera les 300 kilogrammes d’ici dix jours, limite fixée par l’accord nucléaire de 2015.
Behrouz Kamalvandi a ajouté qu’à partir de début juillet, l’Iran pourrait aussi enrichir au-delà des 3,67%… À moins de 20%, l’uranium enrichi sert à des fins civils. Mais s’il dépasse les 90%, il peut être utilisé pour l’arme nucléaire.
D’après Vincent Eiffling, chercheur associé au CECRI de l’Université catholique de Louvain, Téhéran est dans son bon droit et utilise un mécanisme de l’accord pour mettre sous pression les autres États signataires :
« L’accord sur le nucléaire iranien reposait sur la logique que l’Iran acceptait des limitations sur son programme nucléaire et qu’en échange il y ait une levée des sanctions internationales, donc des bénéfices économiques. Aujourd’hui, suite à la position de l’administration Trump, ces bénéfices économiques sont inexistants. L’Iran estime que l’accord sur le nucléaire n’est pas pleinement respecté. L’article 36 de l’accord sur le nucléaire iranien prévoit qu’un État signataire de l’accord peut suspendre ses engagements, s’il estime que d’autres États signataires ne respectent pas les leurs. »
