Le Nigeria a coupé son approvisionnement en électricité au Niger, a appris mercredi l’AFP de source proche de la direction de la Société nigérienne d’électricité (Nigelec), en ligne avec les sanctions décidées par les voisins ouest-africains du Niger déstabilisé par un putsch.
« Le Nigeria a déconnecté depuis hier (mardi) la ligne haute tension qui transporte l’électricité au Niger », a déclaré cette source. Un agent de la Nigelec a de son côté indiqué que la capitale, Niamey, était « alimentée grâce à la production locale ».
Dimanche, la Communauté économique des États d’Afrique de l’Ouest (CEDEAO), dirigée par le président nigérian Bola Tinubu, a décidé de sanctions contre les putschistes qui ont renversé le président élu Mohamed Bazoum il y a une semaine.
En plus d’un ultimatum d’une semaine pour rétablir l’ordre constitutionnel et la suspension des transactions financières avec le Niger, la CEDEAO a décrété le gel de « toutes les transactions de service, incluant les transactions énergétiques ».
Selon un rapport de la Nigelec – seul fournisseur du pays -, en 2022, 70% de la part d’électricité au Niger provenait de l’achat à la société nigériane Mainstream.L’électricité est produite par le barrage de Kainji (ouest du Nigeria).
De nombreux quartiers de la ville de Niamey sont en temps normal soumis à des coupures d’électricité et la décision du Nigeria va aggraver cette situation.
Pour s’affranchir de sa forte dépendance énergétique au Nigeria voisin, le Niger s’active à achever d’ici à 2025 son premier barrage, sur le fleuve du même nom. À quelque 180 km en amont de Niamey, le barrage de Kandadji doit générer annuellement 629 gigawattheure (GWh).
Le Niger, un des pays les plus pauvres du monde, est dépendant de ses partenaires étrangers dans de très nombreux domaines. « Les sanctions feront très mal à notre pays », avait dit le Premier ministre nigérien Ouhoumoudou Mahamadou dimanche sur France 24, au moment où celles-ci se multiplient internationalement.
