Le site américain spécialisé dans les questions de défense Global Fire Power (GFP) a rendu public son classement Global Power Index 2020 qui classe la puissance militaire des forces armées des pays dans le monde. Cet index fait, cette année, l’état de la puissance militaire de 138 pays dans le monde, dont 35 en Afrique. Ainsi, dans ce classement le Niger qui occupait le 25e rang en Afrique en 2019, se positionne désormais à la 20ème place des puissances militaires africaines sur les 35 pays.
Le classement se base sur cinquante de critères, dont le nombre de militaires actifs, la force navale, la disponibilité du carburant pour les opérations militaires, le nombre d’avions de chasse, le budget consacré à la défense et la flexibilité logistique.
Ainsi, en 2020 comme en 2019, l’indétrônable Egypte continue de se placer au premier rang des puissances militaires africaines en enregistrant un score de 0,1872, En raison principalement d’un effectif militaire estimé à 920 000 hommes et 11 700 blindés. L’Egypte est le seul pays africain qui se place dans le top 10 mondial des puissances militaires, en arrivant à la 9ème place de ce classement 2020 du Global Fire Power. Le top 10 des puissances militaires africaines est largement occupé par des géants économiques notamment l’Algérie, l’Afrique du Sud qui enregistre un score de 0,4985, le Nigeria, et l’Angola qui occupe la 5ème place de ce classement. Viennent ensuite, dans l’ordre décroissant, le Maroc, l’Ethiopie, la RD Congo, le Soudan et la Libye qui ferment le top 10 de ce classement au niveau du continent.
Présent dans ce classement 2020, le Niger occupe le 20ème rang africain, 103 sur le plan international et est classé 4eme au Sahel derrière le Tchad qui occupe la première place, le Mali en 2eme position, le Burkina Faso puis le Niger qui devance la Mauritanie.
La formule interne unique de Global Fire Power permet aux nations plus petites et plus avancées sur le plan technologique de concurrencer les nations plus grandes et moins développées et des modificateurs spéciaux, sous forme de bonus et de pénalités, sont appliqués pour affiner davantage la liste annuelle.
