L’Organisation mondiale de la santé (OMS) a déclaré qu’une fois qu’un vaccin Covid-19 sera approuvé, l’Afrique recevra au moins 220 millions de doses initiales.
Le premier lot donnera la priorité aux travailleurs de la santé de première ligne et aux groupes vulnérables, selon le responsable du programme Afrique de l’OMS, Richard Mihigo.
Il a indiqué que la distribution du vaccin sera fera sur la base sur de la taille de la population de chaque pays.
M. Mihigo a indiqué que les 54 pays avaient tous exprimé leur intérêt pour un vaccin Covid-19.
L’Afrique a une population de plus de 1,3 milliard de personnes.
L’initiative mondiale pour les vaccins, appelée COVAX, a l’intention de contribuer à l’achat et à la distribution équitable de 2 milliards de doses de vaccins approuvés d’ici la fin 2021.
L’initiative compte neuf candidats vaccins qui sont testés dans le monde entier.
Deux des vaccins candidats sont actuellement testés en Afrique, selon le patron de la Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), Richard Hatchett.
