Les militaires français présents au Niger « sont prêts à répondre à tout regain de tension qui porterait atteinte aux emprises militaires et diplomatiques françaises », a confirmé, vendredi, l’Etat-Major des armées française à l’agence Anadolu.
Cette déclaration intervient alors que la veille, le pouvoir militaire nigérien a fait savoir que « les services de polices sont instruits afin de procéder à l’expulsion » de l’Ambassadeur de France à Niamey, Sylvain Itté.
« Au terme du délai de 48 heures expiré à compter du 28 août 2023, l’intéressé ne jouit plus de privilèges et immunités attachés à son statut de membre du personnel diplomatique de l’ambassade. Les cartes diplomatiques et les visas de l’intéressé et des membres de sa famille sont annulés », déclarait le pouvoir militaire dans un communiqué de presse.
En début de semaine, le président français Emmanuel Macron, qui réagissait au délai initial de 48 heures fixé à Sylvain Itté pour quitter le Niger, a salué son action lors de la conférence des ambassadeurs.
« Malgré les pressions des putschistes, notre ambassadeur Sylvain Itté restera à Niamey » a-t-il assuré devant les diplomates français réunis à Paris.
Le président français en a profité pour expliquer à nouveau la position de la France sur la situation au Niger, dénonçant en même temps ceux qui critiquent l’intérêt de Paris pour ce pays.
« Notre politique est simple : on ne reconnait pas les putschistes, nous soutenons un président qui n’a pas démissionné, et nous soutenons les politiques de la Cédéao », a-t-il soutenu.
Pour rappel, au-delà des missions diplomatiques sur place, la France comptabilise 1 500 de ses soldats sur le sol nigérien.
