Au moins 18 terroristes ont été tués et 5 autres arrêtés dans une opération des Forces armées nigériennes (FAN), menée conjointement avec la force française Barkhane et le soutien des « partenaires américains », près de Tongo-Tongo (Ouest du pays), non loin de la frontière avec le Mali, a annoncé jeudi à Niamey le ministère nigérien de la Défense.
Selon un communiqué du ministre nigérien de la Défense, M. Kalla Moutari, cette opération dénommée « ACONIT », a été conduite du 8 au 18 juin dernier, dans la région frontalière nord Tongo-Tongo où sévit une bande terroriste de l’Etat islamique au Grand Sahara (EIGS), impliquée dans l’embuscade du 14 mai dernier à Balley Béri (Nord Mangaizé), faisant officiellement 28 soldats nigériens tués.
Un important matériel militaire a été également récupéré lors de l’opération conjointe, a précisé le communiqué, ajoutant qu' » aucune perte humaine ou matérielle n’est à déplorer côté ami ».
La partie nord du Mali, rappelle-t-on, abrite depuis 2012 plusieurs groupes terroristes proches d’Al-Qaïda au Maghreb islamique (Aqmi), d’Ansar Dine et d’autres mouvements rebelles, ainsi que des narcotrafiquants qui mènent des attaques meurtrières de part et d’autre de la frontière commune longue de plus de 800 km entre le Niger et le Mali.
C’est dans cette localité de Tongo-Tongo que, le 5 octobre 2017, cinq militaires nigériens et quatre autres américains ont été massacrés dans une violente attaque revendiquée par l’EIGS.
