Deux ressortissants chinois enlevés en juin 2021 dans la région de Tillabéri, dans l’ouest du Niger et proche des frontières du Burkina Faso et du Mali, ont été libérés après neuf mois de captivité, selon une source sécuritaire nigérienne et l’ambassadeur de Chine au Niger.
« Les deux otages chinois ont été libérés en février au Burkina Faso », a indiqué mardi à l’AFP la source sécuritaire nigérienne qui n’a pas donné de précisions sur les conditions de libération des deux otages.
Jiang Feng, ambassadeur de Chine à Niamey, a déclaré lundi soir à la télévision publique nigérienne, avoir « transmis les remerciements du gouvernement chinois (…) pour la libération des deux otages chinois, cela reflète aussi le grand succès de la lutte contre le terrorisme par le Niger ».
L’ambassadeur a fait ces déclarations à l’issue d’un entretien avec le président nigérien Mohamed Bazoum.
Les deux Chinois, employés d’une société minière, avaient été enlevés dans la nuit du 6 au 7 juin 2021 par « des hommes armés » à Mbanga, un village nigérien situé dans une zone aurifère proche du Burkina Faso de la région de Tillabéri.
La zone dite « des trois frontières » entre Niger, Burkina Faso et Mali, est régulièrement frappée par les groupes jihadistes affiliés à Al-Qaïda ou à l’organisation Etat islamique (EI).
La Chine a renforcé ses liens économiques avec le Niger en 2006, grâce à des prospections d’uranium, d’or et de pétrole dans le nord, l’ouest et le sud du pays.
Le précédent rapt d’un ressortissant chinois dans le pays remontait au 6 juillet 2007: il s’agissait d’un employé de la China Nuclear Engineering and Construction Corporation (CNEC), qui menait des activités de recherche d’uranium dans la région d’Agadez, dans le nord du Niger.
Il avait été enlevé par les rebelles touareg du Mouvement des Nigériens pour la justice (MNJ), qui accusaient alors la Chine d’aider le Niger « dans l’achat d’armements visant à les mater ».
Il avait été libéré après quelques jours d’intenses négociations.
