Alors que l’Afrique essaie de rattraper son retard dans la vaccination contre le Covid-19, les dernières annonces du régulateur européen risquent d’y mettre un coup de frein. Mercredi, l’Agence européenne du médicament a reconnu « un lien possible » entre le vaccin AstraZeneca et de « très rares » cas de thromboses. A cela s’ajoute une méfiance envers les vaccins qui reste toujours élevée sur le continent.
C’est le vaccin le plus utilisé en Afrique, et celui qui suscite le plus d’inquiétudes. AstraZeneca, peu cher et facile à stocker, a déjà été distribué à une trentaine de pays africains, à hauteur de 24 millions de doses, selon l’Organisation mondiale de la santé.
L’OMS a de nouveau préconisé son utilisation jeudi 8 avril lors d’un point de presse en ligne, malgré la polémique autour de ses effets secondaires. « Lorsqu’on oppose les risques, qui sont extrêmement limités, aux bénéfices potentiels conférés par ce vaccin : réduction des cas sévères, réduction des cas d’hospitalisations et de la mortalité ; les bénéfices sont largement en faveur de la poursuite de la vaccination avec AstraZeneca », a déclaré Richard Mihigo, coordinateur du programme de vaccination de l’OMS.
Des craintes liées à la sécurité du vaccin suédo-britannique avaient vu des pays comme la République démocratique du Congo et le Cameroun suspendre leurs vaccinations avec AstraZeneca le mois dernier par précaution.
Reconnaissant des « inquiétudes » en Afrique envers le vaccin AstraZeneca, Mohamed Malick Fall, Directeur régional de l’Unicef pour l’Afrique de l’Est et l’Afrique australe a souligné l’importance de lutter contre la « désinformation », notamment en faisant appel aux influenceurs à l’image d’Angélique Kidjo.
« Angélique Kidjo a été largement diffusé dans les médias indiquant combien pendant son enfance la vaccination l’a sauvée et lui a permis de devenir ce qu’elle est devenue aujourd’hui. Ce sont des campagnes qu’il faut enclencher et leur donner la même importance que la disponibilité du vaccin. »
Sur la disponibilité, l’Afrique a reçu moins de 2% des vaccins administrés dans le monde, c’est-à-dire 30 millions de doses sur environ 700 millions, selon l’OMS.
