L’argent reçu pourra permettre à ces pays d’alléger leurs dettes pendant les six prochains mois ou de aider au financement de la lutte contre les effets de la pandémie de coronavirus.
Le Fonds fiduciaire d’assistance et de riposte aux catastrophes pourrait ainsi débloquer jusqu’à 959 millions de dollars pour une période de deux ans. En avril dernier, le FMI avait déjà allégé la dette de 25 pays parmi les plus pauvres, en dégageant une enveloppe de 500 millions de dollars.
En Afrique, les 22 pays concernés sont parmi les moins riches du continent à l’exception du Rwanda. Le Mali est également sur les rangs mais a été placé pour le moment sur la liste d’attente. Les dirigeants du FMI attendre de connaître la position de la communauté internationale et de savoir si le nouveau gouvernement issu du régime militaire est officiellement reconnu.
Les 28 pays bénéficiaires : Afghanistan, Bénin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Centrafrique, Comores, RD Congo, Djibouti, Éthiopie, Gambie, Guinée, Guinée-Bissau, Haïti, Libéria, Madagascar, Malawi, Mozambique, Népal, Niger, Rwanda, Sao Tomé-et-Principe, Sierra Leone, Iles Salomon, Tadjikistan, Tanzanie, Tchad, Togo et Yémen.
