Le ministre des Affaires étrangères et porte-parole du gouvernement, Abderaman Koulamallah, a qualifié l’incident de « tentative désespérée ». Il a affirmé que l’agression avait été menée par un groupe de jeunes armés de machettes et composé d’individus « complètement drogués ».
Lors d’une intervention télévisée, Koulamallah a expliqué que l’attaque impliquait 24 individus armés de coupe-coupe et de couteaux, qui sont arrivés à bord d’un véhicule DINA simulant une panne devant la présidence. Les assaillants ont poignardé les quatre gardes en poste, tuant l’un d’eux et blessant gravement deux autres, tandis qu’un quatrième a été légèrement blessé.
Le ministre en charge des affaires étrangères a déclaré « On a constaté qu’ils avaient beaucoup d’alcool, des petites bouteilles d’eau remplies d’alcool, on dirait du whisky ou quelque chose comme ça, et avec un peu de drogue », ajoutant que les assaillants portaient des « gris-gris » censés les protéger des balles.
Six assaillants ont été capturés vivants, qui selon le ministre étaient « des Tchadiens qui parlent l’arabe », sans préciser leur quartier d’origine « pour des besoins de l’enquête ».
Le bilan fait état de 19 morts, dont 18 assaillants et un garde de la présidence. Le procureur de la République devrait fournir des détails complémentaires dans les prochaines heures.
