L’armée nigérienne a annoncé samedi 10 juin avoir tué trois assaillants lors d’une attaque la veille. Des hommes « lourdement armés » ont attaqué ses positions près d’une mine d’or, dans la zone désertique d’Arlit (nord), près de l’Algérie.
La position militaire a été attaquée vendredi 9 juin, aux environs de 17h GMT, par « un ennemi lourdement armé » à bord de huit véhicules, selon un communiqué de l’état-major des Armées du Niger. Elle se situe à Tchibarakaten près de la frontière algérienne, où des milliers de personnes extraient de l’or de manière artisanale.
Le communiqué ajoute : « la réaction énergique » des militaires nigériens a permis de « repousser » les assaillants qui, après des « poursuites« , ont pu « s’exfiltrer vers le nord » en laissant sur place trois corps.
L’armée affirme avoir récupéré quatre véhicules Toyota, une mitrailleuse de 12,7 mm, plusieurs roquettes et diverses munitions des assaillants dont les identités n’ont pas été précisées.
Un véhicule de l’armée a été endommagé lors des combats, note le communiqué.
Mi-avril, cinq soldats nigériens avaient été tués par des « hommes armés« , alors qu’ils assuraient la sécurité d’un convoi d’orpailleurs qui venait de quitter le site de Tchibarakaten.
Les braquages et autres attaques contre des orpailleurs sont devenus fréquents dans la région d’Agadez. Des actes de banditisme y persistent depuis la fin des deux rebellions touaregs (1991-1995 et 2007-2009), alimentés par l’effondrement de l’État en Libye proche.
Le 12 avril 2022, quatre soldats avaient été tués par des hommes armés « non identifiés » dans le Djado, zone aurifère de la région d’Agadez, dans l’extrême-nord proche de la Libye.
Vastes étendues désertiques, les zones nigériennes frontalières de la Libye et de l’Algérie ne sont généralement pas ciblées par les djihadistes, mais sont des corridors pour le trafic de migrants, d’armes et de drogues notamment vers l’Europe.
Elles abritent également des sites aurifères artisanaux qui attirent des milliers de nigériens et de ressortissants de pays voisins.
Les autorités locales dénoncent souvent la « dégradation de la situation sécuritaire » sur les axes routiers où sévissent des bandes armées.
Les États-Unis surveillent notamment cette zone grâce à une importante base de drones située à Dirkou, proche de la Libye.
