Le président Emmanuel Macron a annoncé dimanche que la France mettrait fin à sa présence militaire au Niger et retirerait son ambassadeur du pays après la destitution de son président démocratiquement élu lors d’un coup d’État.
Cette annonce constitue un coup dur, bien que prévu, porté à la politique de la France en Afrique, après le retrait des troupes françaises du Mali et du Burkina Faso voisins ces dernières années à la suite de coups d’État dans ces pays.
La France avait stationné des milliers de soldats dans la région à la demande des dirigeants africains pour lutter contre les groupes jihadistes.
La France a maintenu quelque 1 500 soldats au Niger depuis le coup d’État de juillet et a refusé à plusieurs reprises l’ordre de la nouvelle junte de quitter son ambassadeur, affirmant que la France ne reconnaissait pas la légitimité des putschistes.
Les tensions entre la France et le Niger, une ancienne colonie française, se sont intensifiées ces dernières semaines, et Macron a récemment déclaré que les diplomates survivaient grâce aux rations militaires alors qu’ils se retranchaient dans l’ambassade.
Dans une interview à la télévision France-2, Macron a déclaré qu’il s’était entretenu dimanche avec le président déchu Mohamed Bazoum et lui avait dit que « la France a décidé de ramener son ambassadeur, et dans les prochaines heures, notre ambassadeur et plusieurs diplomates rentreront en France ». «
Il a ajouté : « Et nous mettrons fin à notre coopération militaire avec les autorités nigériennes ».
Il a indiqué que les troupes seraient progressivement retirées, probablement d’ici la fin de l’année.
Il a noté que la présence militaire de la France au Niger répondait à une demande du gouvernement nigérien de l’époque.
La coopération militaire entre la France et le Niger était suspendue depuis le coup d’État. Les dirigeants de la junte ont affirmé que le gouvernement de Bazoum n’en faisait pas assez pour protéger le pays de l’insurrection.
