La Banque mondiale a approuvé ce mercredi 15 Avril 2020 un financement de 13,95 millions de dollars destiné à prévenir, identifier et faire face à la menace que le coronavirus fait peser sur la santé publique au Niger et à renforcer les capacités de préparation des systèmes nationaux.
Le Projet de riposte d’urgence à la pandémie de Covid-19 de la BM via l’Association internationale de développement (IDA) viendra appuyer le plan d’intervention mis en œuvre par les autorités nigériennes en facilitant l’achat rapide de médicaments et d’équipements indispensables pour le traitement des infections au coronavirus. Il soutiendra également la campagne nationale de sensibilisation déployée par les pouvoirs publics auprès de la population en vue de freiner la propagation de la maladie. Le projet s’attachera en particulier à renforcer le niveau de préparation du pays en développant les moyens de dépistage précoce et de traitement des patients et en améliorant les capacités des laboratoires et la veille sanitaire.
« Il est crucial d’être proactif dans la lutte contre le coronavirus. Ce programme apporte au Niger un soutien urgent afin d’empêcher la propagation de l’épidémie de Covid-19, de limiter la transmission locale du virus et d’atténuer son impact sanitaire », souligne Joelle Beatrice Dehasse, responsable des opérations de la Banque mondiale pour le Niger.
Le Groupe de la Banque mondiale prend des mesures rapides et de grande envergure en vue d’aider les pays en développement à renforcer leur action contre la pandémie et à améliorer la veille sanitaire et les interventions de santé publique, tout en soutenant le secteur privé pour permettre aux entreprises de poursuivre leurs activités et maintenir les emplois. Il prévoit d’apporter jusqu’à 160 milliards de dollars de financements au cours des 15 prochains mois, afin d’aider les pays à protéger les populations pauvres et vulnérables, soutenir les entreprises et favoriser le redressement de l’économie.
L’Association internationale de développement (IDA) est l’institution de la Banque mondiale qui aide les pays les plus pauvres de la planète. Fondée en 1960, elle accorde des dons et des prêts à taux faible ou nul pour financer des projets et des programmes de nature à stimuler la croissance économique, réduire la pauvreté et améliorer la vie des plus démunis. L’IDA figure parmi les principaux bailleurs de fonds des 76 pays les plus pauvres de la planète, dont 39 se trouvent en Afrique. Ses ressources bénéficient concrètement à 1,6 milliard de personnes. Depuis sa création, l’IDA a soutenu des activités de développement dans 113 pays. Le volume annuel de ses engagements est en constante augmentation et s’est élevé en moyenne à 21 milliards de dollars au cours des trois dernières années, 61 % environ de ce montant étant destinés à l’Afrique.
