Le Président burkinabè Roch Marc Christian Kaboré a été désigné, jeudi, nouveau président en exercice de l’Autorité du bassin du Niger (ABN), à l’issue du 12ème Sommet de la conférence des chefs d’État et de gouvernement de l’ABN organisé par visioconférence.
« Lors du huis clos, les chefs d’État ont désigné, à l’unanimité, SEM Roch Marc Christian Kaboré, Président du Faso, nouveau président en exercice de la conférence des chefs d’État et de gouvernement de l’Autorité », a rapporté le site de la présidence nigérienne rendant compte de la participation du président Mohamed Bazoum aux travaux du Sommet.
Roch Marc Christian Kaboré succède ainsi à son homologue nigérian Mohammadu Buhari qui assure la présidence en exercice de l’ABN depuis 2016.
À l’issue de leurs travaux, les chefs d’État et de gouvernement ont, validé « cinq résolutions adoptées par le Conseil des ministres de l’ABN relatives, entre autres, à la mise en place de la feuille de route du Secrétariat exécutif relative à l’organigramme du secrétariat et la construction du siège de l’ABN que la capitale nigérienne Niamey va abriter.
Les dirigeants des pays de ABN ont, en outre, validé « le plan opérationnel relatif aux actions de développement » et ont décidé de renvoyer la désignation du secrétaire exécutif de l’ABN au prochain sommet.
Crée en 1964 sous l’appellation de « Commission du fleuve Niger », avant de devenir Autorité du Bassin du Niger en 1981, l’ABN regroupe neuf pays riverains du fleuve Niger (Bénin, Burkina Faso, Cameroun, Côte d’Ivoire, Guinée, Mali, Niger, Nigéria et Tchad), avec une population estimée à 160 millions d’habitants. Elle a notamment pour missions d’assurer la coopération dans la gestion et le développement des ressources du fleuve Niger.
