Le Club de Paris a annoncé le 4 mai dernier, le gel des remboursements des dettes du Niger sur la période allant du 1er mai au 31 décembre prochain. Cet Etat ouest africain est le cinquième du continent, après le Mali, le Cameroun, le Burkina et la Mauritanie, a bénéficié des largesses de cette organisation informelle regroupant les grands créanciers publics des pays en développement.
Cette facilité a été octroyée par la France qui fait partie des 22 pays membres permanents du Club qui compte entre autres les Etats-Unis, la suisse ou encore le Japon.
Le Niger s’est engagé, comme les autres pays bénéficiaires, à consacrer les ressources ainsi à dégagées à l’augmentation de ses dépenses visant à atténuer l’impact économique, social et sanitaire de la crise du covid-19. Niamey devra en outre renégocier sa dette envers ses autres créanciers.
Le Niger est ainsi l’un des 39 Etats africains devant bénéficier de la suspension du remboursement de leurs dettes contractées auprès des Etats membres du club de Paris dans le cadre d’un accord international, signé le 15 avril dernier, visant à soutenir les Etats en développement dans le cadre de la lutte contre le Covid-19.
