Dans un entretien exclusif accordé au quotidien français La Croix, le Président du Niger donne sa vision des nouvelles autorités du Mali et du départ des forces militaires françaises du pays.
« L’isolement de Bamako en Afrique de l’Ouest est une mauvaise chose pour toute la sous-région, le G5 sahel est mort » attaque Mohamed Bazoum qui développe « Si ce pays était dans un situation normale, nous serions en mesure de développer notre coopération en relation avec Barkhane ». Pour le chef de l’état, les forces maliennes ne remplissent pas leur mission dans la zone des trois frontières « Notre frontière avec le Mali est sous la coupe de l’état islamique. Bamako n’a pas investi les postes avancés dans cette zone.
Dans ce long entretien au journal français, Mohamed Bazoum interpelle également directement Emmanuel Macron : « Qu’attendez-vous de lui interroge le journaliste? » : « Une présence de Barkhane plus conséquente et plus d’équipements pour nos armés ». Pour le Président du Niger, les occidentaux doivent changer leurs règles d’engagements : « les occidentaux en opération prennent trop de précautions. Ils doivent consentir à un peu plus de sacrifices et ne pas être hantés par les pertes ». Mohamed Bazoum s’exprime enfin sur le sentiment anti-français « sur le terrain, les populations n’ont pas ce problème, la présence des occidentaux contribuent à lutter efficacement contre les terroristes »
