Le Niger est un pays à fort potentiel économique, mais son économie reste encore largement axée sur le secteur agricole, représentant près de 40% de son PIB. Cependant, pour assurer une croissance durable et réduire la vulnérabilité de l’économie face aux aléas climatiques, il est important de diversifier ses sources de revenus. Pour ce faire, le Niger mise sur les secteurs minier et pétrolier.
Le Niger entre désert et savane, sans accès à la mer est un pays à l’économie peu diversifiée. Largement dépendant de l’agriculture de subsistance. Pour 70 % de sa population. Ce secteur pourtant très important, pour des millions de personnes, se trouve fortement affecté par les aléas climatiques. Des aléas climatiques qui induisent des campagnes agricoles aléatoires. C’est dans ce contexte que l’économie nigérienne cherche des pistes et moyens de diversification.
Le 10 juin 2022, le gouvernement du Niger a adopté un plan de développement sur 5 ans pour booster l’économie du pays. Il s’agit du PDES (Plan de Développement Economique et Social) 2022 – 2026. C’est la continuité de celui de 2017-2021 dans le cadre de la Stratégie de Développement Durable et de Croissance Inclusive. Pour financer ce plan, le Niger a reçu une promesse de 47 milliards de dollars de l’Union Européenne, son premier partenaire de l’aide au développement. Selon le ministre du commerce du Niger, le Forum des affaires qui se tient actuellement à Niamey est une continuité de cette promesse. Pour Mr Alkache Alhada, intervenu ce matin sur un média international, les secteurs prioritaires pour transformer l’économie du Niger sont les secteurs minier et pétrolier, avec des prévisions de 100 000 barils par jour.
En somme, avec l’entrée du Niger dans la Zone de Libre-Échange Africaine (ZLECAf) en janvier 2021, le Niger s’est offert la possibilité d’une opportunité de diversifier ses activités économiques en élargissant son marché potentiel à 1,3 milliard de personnes en Afrique. Et aujourd’hui avec le Forum des Affaires UE-Niger, c’est un pas important vers une diversification sur la scène économique mondiale.
