Les ministres des Affaires étrangères du G5 Sahel se sont réunis mercredi soir par visioconférence, pour leur première réunion depuis le début de la pandémie du Covid-19.
C’était leur première réunion depuis le début de la pandémie du Covid-19. Plus de 1200 cas ont été enregistrés dans cette région. La Mauritanie, le pays le moins touché avec 8 cas dont un décès, a partagé son expérience avec les autres Etats sahéliens, a affirmé le ministre mauritanien des Affaires étrangères qui a présidé la rencontre.
Pour les pays du G 5 Sahel la pandémie du coronavirus est désormais l’ennemi numéro 1, avant même le terrorisme. Pour y faire face, l’organisation régionale compte sur la prévention et sur l’équipement des hôpitaux.
Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, ministre mauritanien des Affaires étrangères et président en exercice du Conseil des ministres sahéliens, a insisté sur leur approche commune, notamment sur « l’achat du matériel, l’équipement des hôpitaux, l’équipement d’unités spéciales pour éventuellement faire face aux cas médicaux, c’est à dire en ayant la possibilité d’accueillir du matériel, comme les respirateurs, le matériel de réanimation… »
Situation sécuritaire dégradée
La rencontre a également été l’occasion de faire le point sur la situation sécuritaire qui s’est dégradée ces derniers jours avec une série d’attaques meurtrières au Mali et au Burkina Faso. Les chefs de la diplomatie du G5-Sahel ont aussi lancé un appel à leurs partenaires à plus d’engagements financiers pour lutter contre le terrorisme.
« Nous avons eu, durant ces dernières semaines un certain nombre d’opérations qui ont malheureusement coûté la vie à plusieurs de nos citoyens, y compris même aujourd’hui, malheureusement, au Burkina Faso, dans le fuseau central, mais aussi de manière générale dans les trois pays du fuseau central », a rappelé Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed. Les ministres présents ont d’ailleurs condamné l’enlèvement du chef de l’opposition malienne Soumaïla Cissé et exigé sa libération.
La situation sécuritaire, le suivi du sommet de Pau et la nouvelle donne née de la pandémie de coronavirus seront au menu d’une nouvelle réunion par visioconférence le 24 avril prochain entre les ministres du G5 et leurs collègues français des Affaires étrangères et de la Défense.
Les ministres des Affaires étrangères du G5 ont aussi lancé un appel pour une annulation de la dette de tous les pays pauvres d’Afrique dont le Sahel évidemment. Ils ont aussi salué le plaidoyer du président français pour l’annulation de la dette.
