Les deux candidats à la Maison Blanche ont débattu dans une ambiance électrique, mardi, lors de leur premier face-à-face télévisé à Cleveland, suivi par des dizaines de millions d’Américains.
Une effroyable tempête, voilà à quoi s’est résumé le premier débat présidentiel organisé mardi 29 septembre entre les deux principaux candidats à l’élection présidentielle, Donald Trump et Joe Biden. Les deux hommes se sont présentés sur scène à l’appel de leur nom. Ils ont pris place, sans se serrer au préalable la main en raison de l’épidémie de Covid-19, derrière les pupitres installés dans la salle de l’université de Cleveland (Ohio) choisie pour accueillir l’événement. Puis le désordre s’est installé, emportant le modérateur, le pourtant chevronné Chris Wallace, de la chaîne Fox News. Et, par vagues successives, ont déferlé l’agressivité, l’aigreur et la méchanceté.
Au cours des jours précédents, l’équipe de campagne de Donald Trump avait multiplié les métaphores guerrières, évoquant même une « destruction » de l’ancien vice-président démocrate, régulièrement dépeint comme miné par l’âge. Le président sortant s’est tenu à ce cap, interrompant continuellement son adversaire, moquant ses réponses, affichant ouvertement son mépris, y compris sur son parcours universitaire (Joe Biden n’est pas passé par les grandes institutions du pays). « Il n’y a rien d’intelligent en vous », « vous avez été le dernier de votre classe », a assuré Donald Trump. L’objectif était clair : le pousser hors de ses gonds en comptant sur l’un des coups de sang qui ponctuent sa longue carrière qui le ferait apparaître à son désavantage.
