Des centaines de djihadistes de Boko Haram ont fui leur repaire dans le nord-est du Nigeria pour le Niger, poussés par des bombardements de l’armée et d’importantes inondations en cette saison des pluies, ont indiqué une source sécuritaire et des habitants.
Le nord-est du Nigeria est en proie à un conflit vieux de 13 ans entre l’armée et les deux groupes djihadistes rivaux de Boko Haram et de l’Etat islamique en Afrique de l’Ouest (Iswap), qui a fait plus de 40v000 morts et forcé plus de deux millions de personnes à fuir.
Le conflit a essaimé au Niger, Cameroun et Tchad voisins, notamment sur les pourtours du lac Tchad à cheval sur les quatre pays.
Depuis le mois dernier, on assiste à un exode des combattants de Boko Haram hors de leur enclave de la forêt de la Sambisa, frappée par des bombardements de l’armée, a affirmé à l’AFP un haut-responsable sécuritaire nigérian.
« Cet exode s’est accélérée ces derniers jours avec l’intensification des frappes aériennes et à cause des inondations qui ont submergé plusieurs de leurs camps », a ajouté cette source qui préfère garder l’anonymat.
Lundi, un convoi de plus de 50 camions transportant des combattants de Boko Haram et leurs familles a traversé des villages sur une route reliant la forêt de la Sambisa au lac Tchad, selon plusieurs habitants de la région à l’AFP.
Les combattants sont des fidèles de Bakura Buduma, un chef de faction de Boko Haram qui dispose de camps au lac Tchad, côté Niger, selon ces sources. Les autorités nigériennes n’ont pas pu confirmer immédiatement ce déplacement.
Depuis la mort du chef de Boko Haram Abubakar Shekau en mai 2021, tué par les combattants de l’Iswap, la forêt de la Sambisa est désormais largement dominée par le groupe affilié à l’Etat islamique. Nombre de combattants de Boko Haram ayant refusé de leur prêter allégeance ont fui ou se sont rendus aux autorités depuis.
Un climat de violence quasi-généralisée règne dans le nord et le centre du pays le plus peuplé d’Afrique, en proie à des bandes criminelles et/ou djihadistes qui multiplient attaques et enlèvements, à moins d’un an de l’élection présidentielle.
Le président Muhammadu Buhari termine son deuxième mandat en février 2023, critiqué de toutes parts pour son incapacité à endiguer l’insécurité.
