Depuis la fermeture des frontières ordonnée par la Communauté économique des États de l’Afrique de l’Ouest (Cédéao), l’oignon est devenu une denrée chère. Reportage au marché Dantokpa, de Cotonou.
L’augmentation du prix du sac d’oignons a été constatée déjà au mois d’août 2023, au lendemain de la fermeture des frontières. Les camions chargés d’oignons en provenance du Niger ne pouvaient plus entrer au Bénin. Nous sommes en décembre, le mois où l’oignon inonde les marchés, et pourtant, les prix restent élevés.
« Lorsque la frontière a été fermée, le prix a augmenté », dit Pascal, rencontrée au marché Dantokpa, de Cotonou. « L’oignon est allé jusqu’à 40, 50, même 70 000 (francs CFA). C’est trop cher. Il faut nous aider. Aidez-nous monsieur le Président ! », lance Marthe, elle aussi rencontrée au même marché.
Bakary, nigérien et ancien dans le business de l’oignon, explique que l’augmentation des prix est due à la nouvelle route qu’empruntent les camions, plus longue et plus chère. « Les oignons quittent le Niger et passent par Sokoto. De Sokoto, les camions arrivent dans la capitale nigériane pour entrer au Bénin. Avant la fermeture de la frontière, les camions empruntaient le corridor qui nous mène directement de Malanville à Cotonou », dit-il.

Mais la denrée s’écoule difficilement, parce trop chère.
