Neuf ans après le déclenchement en 2013 de l’opération Serval (muée depuis en Barkhane) pour stopper, à l’appel des autorités maliennes, les colonnes djihadistes fonçant sur la capitale Bamako, les militaires français vont se retirer du Mali.

Il s’agit de revoir « le modèle d’intervention militaire au Sahel à partir d’un constat partagé par tous les acteurs : en s’adossant à la force Wagner, une « milice » privée russe, la junte au pouvoir au Mali a fait le choix d’une « rupture », pas seulement avec la France, dit-on à l’Élysée, mais avec l’ensemble des partenaires africains et européens, soutient Paris qui indique qu’ainsi « une nouvelle page de l’intervention international dans la région ». Il est effet annoncé le redéploiement de Barkhane dans les pays voisins du Mali.
