Le Programme alimentaire mondial (PAM) et l’Organisation des Nations unies pour l’alimentation et l’agriculture (FAO) ont mis en garde, ce lundi, contre l’aggravation des urgences alimentaires dans 4 pays, notamment au Soudan où le conflit armé a déclenché une famine.
Le Burkina Faso, le Mali et Haïti viennent aussi s’ajouter aux pays menacés, dans un contexte de restrictions des mouvements des personnes et des biens. Ces quatre pays rejoignent ainsi l’Afghanistan, le Nigéria, la Somalie, le Soudan du Sud et le Yémen dans la liste des pays les plus menacés par la famine.
Dans leur rapport, les deux agences onusiennes ont appelé à sauver des vies et des emplois en urgence dans les pays où les niveaux d’alerte contre la famine glissent « vers des conditions catastrophiques », rapporte l’agence de presse américaine Associated Press.
Les agences de l’ONU ont identifié 22 pays comme des “points chauds“ risquant une insécurité alimentaire aiguë.
Selon le directeur général de la FAO, Qu Dongyu, « les voies du statu quo ne sont plus une option dans le paysage des risques d’aujourd’hui, si nous voulons parvenir à la sécurité alimentaire mondiale pour tous, en veillant à ce que personne ne soit laissé pour compte », rapporte l’AP.
Dongyu a appelé à une action immédiate dans le secteur agricole « pour sortir les gens du seuil de la faim, les aider à reconstruire leur vie et fournir une solution à long terme pour s’attaquer aux causes profondes de l’insécurité alimentaire ».
Le même rapport a fait état d’un éventuel débordement du conflit au Soudan, l’aggravation des crises économiques dans les pays pauvres et l’escalade des inquiétudes face au phénomène climatique El Niño, prévu pour la mi-2023, qui risque d’affecter lourdement les pays vulnérables.
Selon la même source, un million de personnes devraient fuir le Soudan, et 2,5 millions de Soudanais à l’intérieur du pays feront face à une famine aiguë dans les mois à venir, et ce, sur fond de problèmes sécuritaires perturbant les voies d’approvisionnement passant par Port-Soudan.
La directrice exécutive du PAM, Cindy McCain, a pour sa part souligné l’augmentation du nombre de personnes souffrant de la faim dans le monde, et a appelé à une action claire pour « aider les gens à s’adapter au changement climatique et, en fin de compte, prévenir la famine ».
