La France se prépare à évacuer ses ressortissants du Niger. Le Burkina Faso et le Mali, pays voisins également dirigés par des militaires, ont mis en garde Paris contre toute intervention armée visant à rétablir Mohamed Bazoum dans ses fonctions.
«Face à la dégradation de la situation sécuritaire au Niger, et profitant du calme relatif dans Niamey, une opération d’évacuation par voie aérienne est en cours de préparation depuis Niamey», a écrit ce 1er août l’ambassade de France aux Français du Niger, ce qu’a confirmé le ministère des Affaires étrangères à Paris. Cette évacuation «aura lieu très prochainement et sur un laps de temps très court», a souligné l’ambassade, précisant qu’elle faisait l’objet «d’une coordination avec les forces nigériennes».
Quelques 500 à 600 ressortissants français sont actuellement présents au Niger, selon Paris. La France, ex-puissance coloniale dans la région et soutien indéfectible du président Bazoum, apparaît comme la cible privilégiée des militaires qui l’ont renversé. Ils l’ont accusée le 31 juillet de vouloir «intervenir militairement», ce qu’a démenti la cheffe de la diplomatie française, Catherine Colonna. «C’est faux», a-t-elle déclaré sur la chaîne BFMTV. «Il faut démonter les intox et ne pas tomber dans le panneau», a-t-elle également déclaré à propos des slogans anti-français qui ont notamment fleuri lors d’une manifestation devant l’ambassade de France à Niamey le 30 juillet. Des milliers de manifestants favorables au putsch militaire ont voulu entrer dans l’ambassade, avant d’être dispersés par des tirs de grenades lacrymogènes. Les putschistes nigériens ont affirmé que les tirs de gaz lacrymogène avaient fait «six blessés, pris en charge par les hôpitaux» de la capitale.
